Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
Americanah was the third novel I read from Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie which allowed me to witness how her style has changed as an author. Half of the yellow was my favourite until I read Americanah which is also rich and wordy.
Set in Lagos, America and London, Americanah tells the story of Ifemelu and Obinze. This book is about a lot of things. Ifemelu and Obinze have a beautiful love story, one that only a few people can imagine having in a lifetime, much like many love stories it is filled with pain and joy.
I fell in love with this book. It has never taken me this long to get through a book. Americanah is one of those reads that you have to take breaks in-between to process and think about what you’ve just read. Furthermore, Ifemelu is faced with the race for the first time in her life, she deals with the newness of race in a proactive way by starting a blog, where she writes about her experiences with race in America. As she stays longer in America, she’s confronted with issues of hair, interracial dating and depression.
However, Obinze sets his side to London, where he, unfortunately, becomes an illegal immigrant. His experience in London was quite discouraging as he had to get piece jobs to get by. He found this difficult as he was a proud and intelligent man.
Ifemulu and Obinze come face to face in Nigeria after 13years of being apart, he is married with a wife and she is single and career-focused. I can honestly say I’ve learned more about race and how the immigration process works, I’m honestly glad that Ifemeulu and Obinze found the way back to each other, this was honestly one of the best works from Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. I can’t wait to get started on “The thing around your neck” by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.
This is a book about Africa and African diasporic experience. This is a book about identity and belonging. This is a book that should be read by everyone. Americanah is a richly told story of love and expectation set in today’s globalized world.
