
Angie Motshekga, Basic Education Minister, announced the results of the 2019 National Senior Certificate examination in Midrand on Tuesday evening. Class of 2018 achieved a 78.2% pass rate, which was an increase of 3.1% from 2017.
In 2018, approximately 800 800 pupils registered for the November 2018 NSC examination. In 2018, Gauteng dominated the 2018 NSC results with an 87.9% pass rate, however, class of 2019 is dominated by Free State at 88.4 followed by Gauteng at 87.2%. In 2019, a total of 787 717 candidates registered for the November 2019 NSC examination. 616 754 of whom were full-time students and 170 963 were part-time candidates.
The overall performance has improved as compared to the previous years.
“There is no doubt that the results of the Class of 2019 are remarkable but the greater challenge is to work together to sustain this achievement,” said Minister of Basic Education, Mrs. AM Motshekga in a statement.
“We celebrate the achievements of the Class of 2019. A number of our learners have persevered despite all odds to ensure that they attain the National Senior Certificate that serves as a gateway to a career, entrepreneurial opportunities or further studies. We congratulate you on your achievements and we are confident that you will make a difference not only to your families but to your communities and to our nation as a whole.” She added.
Class of 2019 Matric Exam Results has increased and gave an overall pass percentage of 81.3% which is a 3.1% increase. The least performing province is Limpopo province at 73.2%.

In South Africa, the poorest subject performance in High School is Mathematics at a pass rate of 54.6 nationwide. Whereas the highest subject performance is History standing at 90%.
