It is now confirmed that the Matric Pass rate has achieved 5.1 percentage points less as compared to the 2019 Matric, bringing the overall pass rate to 76.2%. Free State came as the top province with the highest pass rate of 85.1 followed by Gauteng sitting at 83.3%.

The top performing district is Tshwane South retaining it’s position for the second time in a row with these year’s matric results.

Minister Angie Motshekga announced the results on 22 February 2020 and is proud of the results despite the world’s pandemic. “And chair, as much as we had a drop, I am very grateful to all South Africans for having helped us because, in essence, I was expecting a bloodbath.”

Provincial performance is as follows:

  • Free state 85.1%
  • Gauteng 83.3%
  • Western Cape 79.9%
  • KwaZulu Natal 77.6%
  • North West 76.2%
  • Mpumalanga 73.7%
  • Limpopo 68.2%
  • Eastern Cape 68.1%
  • Northern Cape 66%

“The teachers themselves assisted in making sure they sacrifice their own time in their work even beyond the call of duty. We also had professionals from different universities who came up with different strategies. There were ICT interventions that included the provision of devices, data, online virtual classes, and radio lessons.”
