President Cyril Ramaphosa is set to deliver the State Of The Nation today ( Thursday, 10 February 2022).
The Pandemic has continued to cause havoc across the country, especially when new variants keep being discovered and countries ban travel to South Africa. On the lighter note, the effects of the new variant has not been as significant as previous variants. The current state of the pandemic should be addressed and the President needs to outline the plan to speed up the country’s economic recovery. Regulations have been eased and the President needs to clarify as to whether regulations will continue to be loosened further so that economic activity across the country continues gaining momentum.
Could the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant be extended? With the unemployment rate peaking at record levels and the impact of COVID, an extension of the SRD grant could be on the table. The question is, how will this extension be funded.
The President is also expected to address the findings of the state capture report. The Presidency received the second part of the report of the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into Allegations of State Capture, Corruption and Fraud in the Public Sector at the Union Buildings on Tuesday, 1 February 2022.
Due to fire that burned the National Assemble last month, Cape Town City Hall has been converted into the Parliamentary precinct for this year’s State of the Nation Address.
